Transportation

Set on the Coast of Amalfi, Naples is located roughly 2 hours by train from the Italian capital. Naples is a large, spread-out city, which stretches along the waterfront. If you want to go for a longer journey, there are some options for the city and the bay. The Central railway station together with the bus station is situated just off Piazza Garibaldi in the ancient heart of the city.

Getting around the city

Bus

Bus

A bit crammed and slow, yet quite efficient, the busses in Naples are the best way of getting around the city centre. The local busses are perfect for hops across the city as well. Every bus stops at Piazza Garibaldi, the ancient heart of the city and the hub of the public transport. You can receive ANM bus information in the west corner of the square. Bus tickets can be purchased either in the newsstands or in the typical "tabacchi" (tobacco shops). If you do not mind a bit more walking, we advise you to explore Naples on foot, since buses are usually crowded.

Subway

Subway

Apart from the bus system, there is a small-scale underground system, called the metropolitana. It runs along the city centre for around four stops between Garibaldi Square and Mergellina, crossing in the end Pozzuoli and Solfatara. A new subway station at Dante Square is under construction. When completed, it will connect Vomero, the hills and the town centre. Furthermore, there are 3 funiculars, which go up Vomero hill. All three funicular lines, Funiculare di Chiaia, Funiculare Centrale and Funiculare di Montesanto, terminate in mid Vomero, near Piazza Vanvitelli.

Taxi

Taxi

When it comes to taxis, you should have in mind that apart from being intolerably slow, they might also try to cheat you, so make sure that the taxi-driver turns on the meter when you get in. The rate starts from 2.07, with a minimum fare for the journey 3.10. Have in mind that the trips from the airport have an additional charge of 2.58 and so do all journeys between 10 pm and 7 am. The taxis on public holiday also incur an extra 1.55. This brings a lot of confusion to not only tourists and visitors but also to locals, who are often amazed at the stunts the cab drivers pull to get a higher charge.
